The four major types of EB are defined by where in the skin the blister occurs:
- EB Simplex (EBS): epidermis
- Junctional EB (JEB): dermal-epidermal junction
- Dystrophic EB (DEB): dermis
- Kindler Syndrome: mixed (epidermis, dermal-epidermal junction or dermis)
Further classification depends on the mode of inheritance (dominant vs. recessive) and clinical presentation. The identification of the specific genetic mutation also helps define the type of EB present.
